Chapter 1 - social account types and security back up guide

Types of Instagram accounts

Did you know that Instagram offers three distinct types of accounts?

Surprisingly, many people aren't aware of this. And even if they are, they often struggle to distinguish between them. Whether you're setting up your Instagram Influencer account or already have one in operation, it's crucial to ensure you're utilising the appropriate type of account. The good news is, this setting can be adjusted whenever needed. Your choice of account type significantly impacts how you track your influence and growth on Instagram, as well as the features available to you.

How to change your account type

Switching your account type on Instagram is a straight forward process.

Here's how:

  • Go to your settings.
  • Tap the three horizontal lines at the top of your page.
  • Select "Account."
  • You'll see the available types of accounts you can switch to.
  • Click on the account type you prefer.
  • Remember, you can always change this back at any time.

Personal Instagram accounts

Almost all Instagram accounts start as a personal account. This is the default setting when starting a new account on Instagram.

The biggest downside to having a personal account is that you do not have access to Instagram Analytics - a necessary tool for influencers. You are also unable to schedule posts, monetise your account or add contact details.

Creator Instagram accounts - USE THIS!

The ideal account type for influencers is the creator account, which is the latest addition to Instagram's account options. It provides content creators and influencers with access to many of the top features typically available to business accounts.

You have the ability to:

  • Select a category label to clearly indicate your personal brand's niche.
  • Incorporate links into Instagram stories.
  • Utilise Instagram Analytics and Insights.
  • Establish and oversee promotions.
  • Access tools and features for "branded content."

Business Instagram accounts - USE THIS!

A business profile is designed explicitly for businesses. Brands can effectively handle "branded content," utilise Instagram Shopping, showcase business contact information, oversee ad campaigns, and more. However, one notable drawback is that a business account must be linked to a Facebook page and can only be connected to one Facebook page at a time.

Instagram security

Instagram is becoming more targeted by hackers every day, which is why it is so important to protect yourself and your account. Almost all Influencers know of at least one other Influencer who has been a victim of hacking! It is a scary thought and often prompts us to change our passwords. Although it is impossible to be 100% safe online, there are more things you can do than just changing your password and hoping for the best.

How to find the Security settings on Instagram:

  • Click on the three horizontal lines on your main profile page
  • Go to Settings
  • Click on the Security tab

Password

Changing your password on a weekly basis may seem frequent, but even small adjustments can yield significant security benefits.

Login activity

Regularly monitor your "login activity" every few days to ensure that no unauthorised devices have accessed your account. If you spot any suspicious devices listed, promptly change your password and log out all other devices to maintain security.

Saved login information

Avoid enabling either of these options! If a hacker gains access to your account, enabling these tabs could potentially allow them to re-enter your account.

Two-factor authentication

Take action immediately! If you haven't already set up two factor authentication, do it right away. It's the most effective method to safeguard your account. With two factor authentication in place, if an unrecognised device attempts to access your account, it will be prompted to provide additional verification, such as a code sent to your phone.

  • A login code from your authentication app
  • A code from a text message (to your phone)
  • Login request notifications sent to you
  • Backup codes (for when you can't access your account) - you should write these down somewhere SAFE!)
  • Trusted devices (this shows which devices you have previously told Instagram are safe to log in to your account)

Security check up

Periodically, you should run a security check through the Instagram app to ensure the safety of your account. From there, you can update or change various security settings, including your password, email address, mobile phone number, and two factor authentication settings.
